ᐅ Is an extractor fan necessary in the kitchen?

Hello everyone,

We have purchased an apartment in the Munich suburbs from the developer. The shell of the building has started, and the apartment is expected to be ready to move in by mid-2019.

Now, the developer has offered us the option to order a special fan for the kitchen on a custom request basis. This active fan is not suitable for connecting to a range hood.

It is the same fan as in the bathroom of the apartment, which ensures the ventilation of the apartment (model Lunos Silvento). The device in the kitchen will be integrated into the existing ventilation system of the apartment and connected to the exhaust main duct.

The fan is planned to be installed at the position marked Kü-L-AV-v in the attached kitchen plan and can be switched on and off via a push button. The kitchen is partially open to the living/dining area above.

The extra cost for the fan is around 800 EUR, which includes all necessary labor and material costs.

We are currently considering whether to order the kitchen fan. Our doubts/questions are as follows:
  • Is this even necessary? We have a large window in the kitchen that can be opened if needed.
  • Noise level during operation
  • Price!
For the reasons mentioned above, we are currently leaning towards not ordering the kitchen fan. What are your experiences – does anyone have it and can’t do without it anymore?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

Well, for exactly the reasons mentioned by @fragg, I would definitely support connecting the kitchen to the ventilation system as well.

@kbt09 Thanks for your assessment.

Does anyone here in the forum perhaps use a recirculating range hood together with a separate mechanical ventilation system in the kitchen?

How important do you consider the additional ventilation system, and would its benefits justify the cost of 800 EUR?

Yes, we do: recirculating range hood plus exhaust vent connected to the central ventilation system in the kitchen. The living room receives fresh air through its own vents, which then flows into the kitchen and is extracted through the exhaust vent. This works great because moisture and odors are gradually removed—without needing to open a window.

Different technology, but comparable in terms of comfort.

From your point of view, how important is the additional ventilation system, and would the benefits justify the cost of 800 EUR?

Only you can answer the question about comfort for yourself. The kitchen needs fresh air, either supplied by a fan or through a window.

Beyond that, the question is how the fan fits into the overall ventilation concept of the entire home and the energy calculations. You shouldn’t just leave out part of that system. So where does the fresh air supply come from?

Noise level: the fan is probably audible. However, if the open-plan kitchen isn’t directly next to the sofa and you don’t live near a noise source, I think the fan shouldn’t be bothersome.

By the way, there are also units with heat recovery, but that would be in recirculation mode (see ventilation concept).
