Hello everyone,

In our new build, the electrical installation is currently in progress. I noticed that the electrician installed four switches in the bedroom directly opposite four switches in the bathroom on an 11.5 cm (4.5 inch) interior wall. In some cases, deep electrical boxes (about 6 cm (2.4 inches)) were used, so that the back sides of the plastic boxes are directly facing each other without any masonry in between. I am now concerned about sound insulation. The electrician has not finished the work yet, so I could ask him to make changes. In our initial conversation, the electrician downplayed the issue, likely because he wants to avoid additional work. Are my concerns justified, and is he obliged to make corrections at his own expense?

It is certainly acceptable if you still have concerns to just shift either the bedroom or the bathroom by a few centimeters (inches).

A 11.5 cm (4.5 inch) wall unfortunately provides almost no sound insulation even without openings. You might as well skip it, as these walls are also structurally insignificant.

Separating the bedroom and bathroom with such a wall is, in my opinion, a design mistake.

That’s fine. As mentioned here before, 11.5cm (4.5 inches) walls are like cardboard. There is virtually no sound insulation. I hope you don’t get up at very different times..

I also have an 11.5 cm (4.5 inch) wall between the bedroom and the bathroom, and I get up much later. I don't hear anything. The shower is also positioned with its long side against the bedroom wall. So far, I haven't found this bothersome. Maybe it's because the water pipes are not inside the wall but within the pre-wall installation of the washbasin. Without the pre-wall installation, the pipes would probably have been embedded inside the wall.

Sand-lime brick or maybe just soundproof. Technically, everything can go through there; such walls are usually built as 17.5 cm (7 inch) ones.
