ᐅ Is a rainwater tank worth it for garden irrigation?

Hello,

I wanted to ask if a rainwater cistern is worth it at all if it is only used for garden irrigation.

About our house: All the rainwater is directed through pipes into the garden to the soakaways (from both sides of the roof and from the garage driveway).

My idea was to install a cistern before the soakaways with an overflow that flows into the soakaways.

We would then use the water for garden irrigation (possibly with an automatic irrigation system).

Is it possible to install the cistern yourself?

Well, with existing ground cover (mulch or wood chips) and manual watering using collected rainwater, watering restrictions from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. could still be an additional option, I suppose. The question is, who enforces it?

At least manual watering isn’t visible from outside the property, unlike running sprinklers. So everyone can decide for themselves whether to follow the rules. Recently, the local authority was here early at 8:30 a.m., but I have no idea if they actually checked anything.

Using a watering can and your own water cannot be checked. Neighbors would likely need to report it.
How evaporation-friendly a garden is designed cannot be verified.

No matter what ban or regulation is introduced, enforcement will be difficult. It is only possible to monitor water usage through water meters.
