ᐅ Is it practical to install a photovoltaic system on the west or east side of a building?

Hello,
we are wondering whether we should install a photovoltaic system on the roof in the near future. The empty conduits for it are already in place. However, we have a hipped roof. On the south side, there is just over 20m² (215 sq ft) available for the system. Would it make sense to also use the west (or east) side to increase the area, even if the sun doesn’t hit it at the optimal angle?

@ntsa86 : Congratulations on the investment!

The feed-in tariff (which is already very low anyway) would expire before we connected to the grid.
The amount of the feed-in tariff depends on the registration date, not the commissioning date. You can save a few months that way.

Yes, a storage solution is currently still too expensive and more of a hobby, even though the idea remains very appealing to me. I also had the calculations done. Ultimately, I was able to save 1,222 kWh per year. This would have resulted in a price of 35 cents per kWh (gross) – without accounting for storage losses.

Personally, I am still hopeful for the further development of bidirectional charging (V2G / Vehicle to Grid). In this case, the electric vehicle is activated as an energy storage for household use. A charming idea, in my opinion.

@hampshire : Thank you! Are you sure about the statement regarding the registration date? According to the Renewable Energy Act clearinghouse, the commissioning date counts (Common legal question No. 110) -> cannot post a link.

That’s how I understood it, and that’s what I was told as well. I’ll see what they do with it, since my documents have been sitting with the grid operator for ages and haven’t been returned yet. In my case, there were 8 months between registration and commissioning. That does make a difference.

According to the solar installer, the modules are considered installed once they are placed on the roof and theoretically functional.

Due to the virus, my modules will now arrive only in mid-April.

That’s what I was told as well; the decisive factor should be when the modules were installed on the roof.
