Hello, in our future utility room there will be a large hot water tank with about 200 liters (53 gallons) and also our washing machine. Would it be better to install a floor drain for possible leaks? Unfortunately, currently there is only the wastewater connection for the washing machine and no hole in the floor. However, the screed has not been poured yet...

1. Is it still common to install such a drain nowadays?
2. If yes, is it possible to add one afterwards?

Best regards, Steffi33.

Regarding point 1: As far as I know, no; our case is also an example of a utility room without a floor drain.
Regarding point 2: Installing one later is very difficult unless there is a basement or similar space below. If the utility room is built on a concrete slab, adding a floor drain afterward will almost certainly not be possible without considerable effort.

Okay... so does this mean that such accidents are no longer expected to happen, or are there sufficient safety measures in place on the devices? Best regards, Steffi33.

If "later" referred to now, then there might still be a chance. The room won't be so large that a slight slope couldn't be created.

However, I think the concern is unfounded.

(Of course, it's different for builders who regularly skin game... In that case, consider full-height tiling and a floor drain.)
