ᐅ Is it Worth Keeping a Construction Blog?

Good evening! 🙂

Right now, our excitement is growing (construction starting spring ’17), and I’m reading more and more building blogs. They are invaluable to us since none of our friends or family have built a house. Since I also enjoy writing, we are considering starting a building blog ourselves.

We’re now debating whether or not to do it. Some homebuilders do it to share experiences. Others even have sponsors and apparently a good number of visitors. A little extra side income (in various forms) never hurts—if you get that far.

My current thoughts are: time commitment, exchange of information, how jealous friends or acquaintances might react when they find us, is it worth it, and so on.

If we were sitting together now at the regular meeting, what would your answer be? 🙂

I think it was worth it:
1. It’s like keeping a diary; you review the construction progress and keep noticing things that still need to be clarified or questions to ask.
2. After a while, the tradespeople also checked in on it—for example, the electrician showed up at the door because he saw that the other workers had finished and he could quickly take care of something.
3. The construction company also reviews it, and they discovered issues in the photos that they then corrected on their own initiative.
4. It’s a great source of information for friends and family who can’t be there in person.

I believe that a construction blog makes a great keepsake. In a few years, you can look back and calmly revisit everything, remembering the (hopefully) enjoyable and exciting time.
Such a blog is also definitely useful for potential home builders. At least for us, reading other blogs taught us a lot or at least gave us inspiration—regardless of the company involved. This was our way of giving back a little.
After signing the contract, we told our consultant/sales representative that we planned to write a blog, which apparently was also shared with other staff members and some of the company’s management...which can certainly be helpful at times 🙂

Hello,

we mainly wrote our building blog as a personal documentation.

At no point did we see it as leverage against our construction company – on the contrary, our company even actively shared our blog (after asking us).

We still enjoy reading the blog from time to time to remind ourselves of details we had forgotten.

Despite now having over 80,000 clicks, we never earned any advertising revenue.

Regards,

Dirk

Our blog is hosted on Blogspot.

If you are interested, I am happy to share the address via private message (since it is a link).

I used Google’s Blogger platform.
The address then gets the extension blogspot.com
