ᐅ Is a 3,000 square meter (approximately 32,000 square foot) plot of land practical?

Hello,

I’m new here and want to start right away with a question. I hope I posted it in the right subforum.

My husband and I are still at the very beginning of our “building a house” project. We have been searching for a plot of land for some time but haven’t found the right one yet.

Now there is a 3,000 m² (0.7 acres) plot for sale. It has no zoning plan and is relatively affordable.

While my husband only sees the large amount of work that must be involved, I see it a bit differently. I understand his concerns, but at the same time, I imagine it would be wonderful to have so much space: a vegetable garden, greenhouse, fruit trees, maybe some sheep and chickens, a pond, and so on.

Of course, all of this involves a lot of work and can only be accomplished if both of us are fully committed. But aside from that, I would like to know if anyone has experience with such a large plot.

How did you make use of the space?
If you grow a lot of fruits and vegetables, can you mostly live off them?
How many years did it take until your garden looked the way you imagined it?
Please share a bit about your experiences and whether you would do it the same way again.

Thank you very much in advance!

I am definitely in favor of a large plot of land. Yes, with only 400 sqm (4300 sq ft) of garden, it can quickly look untidy if you let nature take over on its own. We have 2300 sqm (25,000 sq ft) and would actually like even more. For me, outdoor living in the summer is more important than indoor. We have a spacious driveway—almost grand, 40 meters (130 feet) long—lined with low-maintenance shrubs like boxwood and others. In the garden itself, we have a meadow, not a golf-course lawn, a few fruit trees, and native deciduous trees, with roses or other flowers here and there. In the middle of the garden is our second terrace with an outdoor kitchen. The children have a large area for a proper playground with a climbing tower and more. We trim the hedge and shrubs once a year, and my husband enjoys driving his lawn tractor over the meadow about once a week. I consider our natural oasis to be a real place of relaxation that doesn’t require much work (in my opinion), and whenever we host larger gatherings, we are always admired for our little paradise.

So basically, you have low-maintenance grass plus a few trees and shrubs. That makes it easy to take care of the property – mowing the lawn isn’t very time-consuming!

However, the original poster wants to use the property more intensively, so it won’t be just about mowing the lawn...

A thousand thanks for your incredibly many and very helpful comments!

I already knew it would be a lot of work, but I think I somewhat underestimated it. It doesn’t all have to look perfect, but I do want to be able to use the garden (so not just a lawn). And since my husband isn’t very convinced about the idea either, we will probably continue looking for smaller plots. Maybe we’ll find one that is medium-sized and affordable 😉

Thanks again to everyone!
