Hello everyone,

Our construction is nearly complete, and we are really looking forward to moving in at the beginning of October. However, after everything went very smoothly, a (albeit small) problem has come up:

We had planned to use IPTV for television reception since a bandwidth of up to 50,000 kbits/s (50 Mbps) is available in the residential area. However, it turns out this is not possible via Telekom, but only through the local energy provider EWE operating in the Bremen area. EWE does not offer IPTV, and Telekom and 1&1 only provide up to 16,000 kbits/s (16 Mbps). Vodafone does not support IPTV at our location. Now, I am concerned that 16,000 kbits/s (16 Mbps) might be too slow, especially since the actual speeds at the location are often much lower... Would it be possible to subscribe to an IPTV package without internet service, so I could get the 50,000 kbits/s (50 Mbps) from EWE and IPTV from another provider? As far as I know, this is not possible. Do you have any other ideas?

EWE offers an app #link removed; Epi that allows watching 50 TV channels online, including 8 in HD. However, the app can only be used on laptops, tablets, and smartphones. In theory, it might also be installed on the new Apple TV device via the App Store, which could be a temporary solution.

What would you do?

You always have to consider how much you want to DIY yourself and how the WAF (women acceptance factor) will be affected.

A router behind the TV – I wouldn’t survive a day! 😀

Sure, all of this can somehow be done, but how much do I want to stress myself out with it in everyday life... For example, we decided against Sat>IP and are only planning it as a supplement.

Alright, I get that. ;-) For me, it’s a hobby, and I’m really looking forward to tinkering with it. ;-)

For now, my girlfriend still trusts me. Let’s see how long that lasts. :-D

@EinMarc

There are certainly other options, but I would set up a quad receiver running Enigma2 somewhere. And for each client, an IP box, which are also user-friendly.

Or with a server, but unfortunately I have no experience with that.

I hope the link is okay.

When it comes to clients, there are many different options. I personally use SAT>IP. My Philips TV can connect directly to the server/converter thanks to DLNA technology. Alternatively, you can use KODI (on a Raspberry Pi) plus a TV. This works very well, especially if the TV has a compatible USB port.

In this setup, the Raspberry Pi starts together with the TV and is controlled via the TV remote thanks to HDMI CEC. It works very well and reliably in my case. 🙂

I have at least one TWIN LAN connection in almost every room. I don’t have a single coaxial cable/...

P.S. The only downside is having to accept a minimal latency. Neighbors might cheer for a soccer goal 1-2 seconds before you do 😀

Thank you all very much for the many tips; it definitely makes me optimistic that we can manage this without satellite or the telecom provider. I didn’t want to start a fundamental discussion about whether satellite or IPTV is more practical or better… we simply decided on IPTV and, as Alex85 already mentioned, didn’t plan for any satellite wiring. I think we’ll give EWE-TV a chance and stream via Chromecast or Apple TV. In our case, it’s actually true that EWE provides the faster connection… I’ll also look into the other suggestions. TobiasW., thanks for the tip—that sounds really interesting, especially regarding the individually bookable channel packages like TV in the original language.
Thanks again to everyone!

I would also like to join the discussion.

What do your TV installations look like?

I am currently trying to decide from whom to get connected and what services I want to include.

If I go for 100 Mbps internet plus phone, it already costs me around €35 per month.

I’m wondering if the effort for satellite is still worth it, or if I should just get TV through cable right away.
