Hello,

I was working away from home this week and stopped by the construction site briefly this evening.
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
The main contractor installed the interior window sills, but they protrude by at least 10 cm (4 inches), and probably around 8.5 cm (3.3 inches) after plastering.
Isn’t that unusual nowadays?
That was common practice in the past when you needed to hide radiators underneath.
Now all the issues begin, but surely it can’t stay like this, right?

Best regards,
Daniel

Same here, that's why I suspect that an originally correct dimension was shifted linearly.

In our case, the windows are positioned more towards the exterior, with about 3-4 cm (1–1.5 inches) of masonry visible.

If you build without insulation, I was told to place them centered.
With insulation, they are set further towards the outside.

With all due respect, that is nonsense.
Around me, there are many new houses, and everywhere the windows are installed in the outer third.

That may be so, that was just the information given, and I don’t see anything wrong with it.

Our windows are set quite far inside—at least as far back as shown in the photo. I believe this is because the blinds are installed in front of the windows but still flush with the facade. That’s how we wanted it. Nobody told us that this would cause the windows to be recessed inward, and we hadn’t considered it. But honestly, even if someone had told us, we probably would have made the same choice to avoid having the blind boxes protrude beyond the facade. So we chose to have the narrow interior sills instead.

We were recently asked about the desired overhang. As a compromise between “as wide as possible” and “minimal overhang,” we decided on 4cm (1.5 inches).

However, a few other things were done differently than we expected, without any consultation or confirmation. For example, the balcony door and the adjacent fixed floor-to-ceiling glass panel (3m (10 feet)) share a single blind. If we want to close the view through the large glass panel with the blind, you can no longer access the balcony through the door. We found and still find this very frustrating. We would have assumed that a separate blind for the door is the standard solution.

But what can you do if it wasn’t explicitly agreed upon? Try to see it from the construction company’s perspective. From their point of view, this would also be an unintentional issue that they would have to replace at their own cost.

In my view, a fair solution for both parties would be for the general contractor to cover 50–70% of the costs, with you paying the rest. The same applies to our case. Unfortunately, we failed to negotiate such an arrangement because a few other issues also needed to be settled, and it would have been too stressful to handle everything at once. They offered to replace it at our expense, costing about 800€. So now we’re just living with the shared blind...

Ours are the same way. Also Ytong plus plaster plus nothing else. Only: our window sills are clearly narrower. Width is about the length of a local phone book plus a little more. The windows themselves are fine like that. Otherwise, there are no window sills outside at all. Where else is the cat supposed to doze off?
