Hello everyone,
This is my first post here and I hope you can help me with some questions – I appreciate any answers and support!
My girlfriend and I are building a single-family house, and we are currently installing insulation ourselves (in consultation with a drywall installer) in the intermediate ceiling, garage, and attic. We are a bit concerned that we might not be doing everything correctly. I hope you can help us!
The questions are:
- In consultation with the architect and shell builder, we did not fill the rafters with masonry, but instead pushed the insulation all the way to the outside (see pictures)

1. Is this correct?
2. Should the circled gap (about 5-8cm (2-3 inches) deep up to the rafter) also be insulated?
3. Does the board from the carpenter go directly onto the insulation, or should there be a vapor barrier underneath?
- We plan to insulate both the intermediate ceiling and the attic. The attic will not be converted. Is this correct?
- The rafter height for the intermediate ceiling is 200mm (8 inches), for the attic 240mm (9.5 inches). For the intermediate ceiling, we used 180mm (7 inches) insulation to allow for an air gap. For the attic, we plan to use 240mm (9.5 inches) because with the diffusion-open membrane there should also be ventilation without an air gap. Is that correct?
- In some places, the insulation mats in the intermediate ceiling sag a bit (they were otherwise not properly supported and would have fallen out). Is this okay? (See pictures)

- We have stuffed existing gaps/holes with leftover insulation pieces – is this the correct approach?
- Once all insulation and vapor barriers are installed and windows/doors fitted, we plan to rent a thermal imaging camera to detect thermal bridges.
1. Does this make sense?
2. If we do not find any thermal bridges, can we be sure that everything is done correctly? I am mainly concerned about cavities between the outside and inside that could potentially cause mold.
- Are there any other things we should consider?
Best regards and many thanks in advance
