We are currently planning a circular platform for a yurt (similar to a Mongolian yurt, see e.g. "Pacific Yurts") with a diameter of 9m (30 feet). The platform will be built on point foundations, raising the floor to about 0.5m (20 inches) above ground level. The exterior of the platform up to the floor will mostly be enclosed (e.g. using OSB boards). For the floor surface, we plan to use laminate flooring. The exterior walls and ceiling of the yurt will already have good winter insulation.
For insulating the floor, we are currently considering the following approach and would like to know if this is feasible and sufficient, or if there are better alternatives.
Our plan – layers from bottom to top:
OSB board (22mm (7/8 inch) thick)
XPS rigid foam insulation boards (about 30mm (1 1/4 inch) thick?)
Vapor barrier (or should this be installed below the XPS boards?)
OSB board (15mm (5/8 inch) thick)
Laminate flooring
It should also be noted that electrical wiring and wastewater pipes need to run through the floor, as routing them through the yurt’s exterior walls is not possible.
Thank you in advance, we appreciate any tips!
Best regards from Austria,
Michael
