Hello,

we have purchased an old timber-framed house, and the previous owner insulated the ceiling of the upper floor. I recently took a closer look at the insulation setup because some areas were damaged, and I am wondering if this installation is correct or was done properly.

Inside, the ceiling is suspended. Then there is about 25cm (10 inches) of empty space before the beams start, followed by clay (I think), sand, and similar materials. On top of that, cardboard was partially laid on the floor, followed by glass wool rolls. There are walking paths made of expanded polystyrene (both 160mm (6.3 inches) thick). Additionally, there are polystyrene beads in between.

I am surprised that there is no vapor barrier or similar foil anywhere. When I asked, the previous owner said he was advised to do it this way because the clay essentially acts as a vapor retardant. Currently, everything appears dry, but I am concerned that mold could develop in a few years.

The attic is not used and is relatively open and drafty.

I have attached some photos. Maybe someone has advice on whether I should leave it as it is or how I should proceed.
