Hello everyone,

First of all, I want to say that I am a layperson when it comes to roof insulation...

Now, to the topic: we own a condominium including exclusive ownership of the attic space. I want to convert this attic into a hobby room. Currently, the attic is not insulated.
In the past few days, two roofers visited because I wanted to get quotes for roof windows including installation. I took the opportunity to ask them a bit about the insulation.
Both said independently that, due to the construction, insulation would be very difficult.
The roof structure is a purlin roof... the main purlin is level with the attic floor, as shown in the attached drawing.
Below the attic, there are dormers on both sides, whose ceilings basically form the floor of the attic. (This sounds complicated—I hope you understand what I mean.)
It’s not as simple as just insulating between the rafters; rather, the floor above the dormers would need to be insulated and lined with a membrane.
Additionally, there is the problem that the roof was re-covered about two years ago, BUT the roofers used two different types of membranes. Most of the membrane under the roof tiles is vapor-permeable, but about one quarter is covered with an older white membrane that is apparently not vapor-permeable. The roofers also said this membrane has not been on the market for at least 10 years...
The rafter depth is 140mm (5.5 inches), and heating is also planned to be installed up there.

I hope I haven’t confused you too much.
I would say that I have the necessary craftsmanship and care to insulate the roof... I just want to do it properly and keep the learning curve costs as low as possible.

I appreciate any advice.

Best regards from Wuppertal,

Woody
