Hello everyone

I am currently renovating my house. The house was built in 1988. I have removed the entire screed to install underfloor heating. During this, I noticed that two floor-to-ceiling windows are separated from the outside only by a plastic sheet covered with soil (see photos).

I plan to dig out the area further this evening. Normally, I would expect to find a foundation somewhere underneath.

I am thinking of filling the open space under the window with Styrofoam insulation and then extending a bitumen membrane up from the foundation on the outside. Or is this approach completely wrong?

I would appreciate any tips or advice.

Thank you for your help

Best regards

Open glass sliding door to the garden with table set, chairs, hedges, and garden shed.

Open terrace door; floor exposed, garden with shed outside.

Window frame with yellow insulating material; soil and pipes underneath. Construction site visible.

Open glass door beside excavation pit: shovel next to bricks, loose soil and construction waste.

Bottom edge of window frame with damaged insulation and exposed masonry.
