We currently don’t have a good solution and are hoping to get some tips here.
In our older building from around 1975, we replaced the windows and added new external roller shutters. The old shutters were removed and new boxes installed. There is nothing visible from the outside. Inside, the new shutter boxes extend a few centimeters into the room.
Now to our problem: the lintel above the windows is not insulated and made of concrete (?). If we simply plaster over it, we’re worried it will start to mold. So, we considered attaching rigid foam insulation (Styrodur) to the lintel.
However, this doesn’t feel like a perfect solution because we’re unsure how to do it properly so that it looks good as well. The gap between the lintel and the new shutter box has already been filled with Styrodur and foam, and is now flush with the lintel but recessed compared to the shutter box.
Second issue: on one side (where the belt winder used to be), the lintel is about 20cm (8 inches) longer than the window.
Do you have any tips, pictures, sketches, or anything on the best way to handle this? I have searched a lot but could only find information about insulating the reveals.
Thanks!
