Hello,

Since I like to be prepared well in advance, an important question for me is the flooring.
The current apartment has laminate flooring, which I don’t really like.
I’m not sure if it was poorly insulated, but the walking noises are quite disturbing. It also sounds very hollow when you walk on it.
Are there special insulation options for this, or should I rather choose parquet flooring, even if it is more expensive?

Best regards,
Hans

Hi Hans, I don’t know how you installed the laminate flooring, because normally there should be an underlay for impact sound insulation underneath.

Hi Hans,

I can totally understand that.
Laminate flooring just isn’t as good as hardwood.
It’s not only about the impact sound insulation to better protect the tenant below. It also makes a rattling noise when you walk on it yourself, which can sometimes be annoying.
I prefer carpet in high-traffic areas.
But if you prefer wood, even though laminate is often not real wood, I would recommend hardwood flooring.

Hi Marie,

I’m also leaning towards choosing hardwood flooring. It’s a bit more expensive, but I find it cozier.
The main thing is that it suits me and us so we get a comfortable home.
Neighbors, which you don’t really have in a detached house, don’t matter in this case.
I understand that the sound of footsteps on laminate flooring can bother you personally. Not everyone wears soft slippers after all 🙂

Hans

Yes, preferences vary so much. Both hardwood flooring and laminate can cause more issues as you get older. Especially with hardwood flooring, when you need to refinish it by sanding first 🙂 I would no longer choose hardwood flooring. I would rather go for a tile covering that is constructed like laminate and has underfloor heating installed beneath it.

Hello Henry,

that’s also a good idea, although with tiles the noise can be quite high. I’m thinking about how my wife always makes that clicking sound with her high heels 🙂
Carpet would probably be the best, but neither of us wants that.
Hardwood flooring is a good compromise, even though it will eventually need sanding and resealing.
Underfloor heating is definitely a good option, especially for distributing heat evenly throughout the room.
