Hello,

I want to install laminate flooring over an uneven tiled floor and I’m wondering if that is possible.

The tiles are cracked in some areas. At the most extreme points, there is a height difference of 5-7mm (0.2-0.28 inches) over a length of 1-1.2m (3.3-3.9 feet).

I plan to lay underlay for impact sound insulation beneath the laminate. It is 5mm (0.2 inches) thick, made of rigid boards from extruded polystyrene foam (XPS), and is supposed to be able to compensate for height differences up to 4mm (0.16 inches).

I’m wondering if that will be sufficient or if the floor needs to be leveled in another way?

If needed, could I possibly place an additional 3mm (0.12 inches) board next to the 5mm underlay at the 1-2 spots where the unevenness is worst to improve the leveling there?

Thanks for any tips and help!

Best regards

I would first level the surface by adding the necessary leveling height with a leveling compound. Then, the laminate flooring can be safely installed on top.

And what kind of leveling compound? Something liquid for pouring?

If possible, I would like to avoid that...

Are there any other options?
