Hello,

I bought a kitchen from Ikea and am now in the process of assembling it. I have encountered the following problem:

According to the instructions, the hanging rail for the base cabinets must be installed at a height of at least 82cm (32 inches). Due to the low backsplash in my kitchen, I can only reach 77cm (30 inches) if I want to install the hanging rail below the backsplash. This leaves a 5cm (2 inch) gap between the cabinet and the floor. This means that the cabinet legs and the toe kick panel no longer fit. Even more problematic: the dishwasher no longer fits either. So, I cannot install the hanging rail below the backsplash.

Installing the hanging rail in front of the backsplash is also not an option because the provided holes do not align with the tile joints. I am very reluctant to drill into the tiles.

Therefore, I have considered not hanging the base cabinets at the back, but instead adding additional legs there. However, I am not sure if or how I should still secure them to the wall.

Does anyone have an idea on the best way to solve this problem?

Thank you very much!

How long is the surface you want to "build on"? In our old kitchen, I didn’t screw in about 3 meters (10 feet) of length to the wall and never had any problems. Everything was well adjusted and perfectly level. However, for longer surfaces, I could imagine that issues might arise.

I would simply use different fasteners. Drill small holes (20-30mm (0.8-1.2 inches)) in the back panels and screw the cabinets to the wall using brackets. There are also special adjustable brackets designed for furniture.

If you don’t have a row of drawers that you want to keep all open at the same time, the cabinets won’t tip over even without being fixed to the wall.
