Hello,

I am currently renovating an old building where all the windows will be replaced and external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) will be installed.

I would like to have the new windows installed flush with the exterior wall. My question is whether the old plaster on the reveal should be left in place, which would make the window slightly smaller, or if the plaster should be removed. The masonry is made of aerated concrete.

Good luck

I thought the measurements could be taken with the old windows still installed.

That is often unavoidable, but at that point the damage from removal is not yet present.

A friend will assist me with the measurements.

A professional has the right tools for this. I have my reasons for the advice I gave (and I have explained them).

A different question regarding flush installation: An energy consultant suggested that I should have the windows protrude about 1cm (0.4 inches) from the facade to compensate for the adhesive thickness under the insulation panels, ensuring the insulation panel fits properly against the window frame. Is this common practice? If I have the windows installed exactly flush with the exterior surface, there would otherwise likely be an air gap between the insulation panel and the window frame.

As I understand it, the installation is done flush with the exterior wall, and then the insulation boards extend over the window frame. This ensures that there is no air gap or similar issue.

For example, when foam is used as adhesive, the thickness is 1 to at most 2mm (0.04 to 0.08 inches).

the insulation panels should extend beyond the window frame.
or this can also be done over the roller shutter guide rail.
