Hello everyone,

We are currently considering whether to have the two shower enclosures installed by the plumber in our new build or if it would be better to buy the shower enclosures ourselves and install them. The installation costs 500€ (gross) per enclosure, including measuring. Shower trays will be installed.

Is it better to avoid the hassle and time by having it done professionally, or is this something manageable with DIY skills and some help? What should you be aware of if you decide to do it yourself?

Thanks and best regards!

That needs careful consideration! If you mess up the waterproofing, you know what will happen. If you think the missing warranty is worth –500€ (about $540), then go ahead.

You can even amputate your own toe — if you know what you’re doing. I would consider installing a shower enclosure to be much less complex than an amputation. As long as you’re not both completely clumsy and have enough free time to watch suitable explanatory YouTube videos, I’d say: go for it. (Elsewhere, I advised against installing exterior window sills because of the warranty on waterproofing; in my opinion, this doesn’t contradict that 😉)

Have it done professionally. Even in new builds, walls and corners are almost never exactly 90 degrees, but for example only 89 degrees. This becomes apparent with glass panels, as they are cut precisely. This means you will always notice it in the joints... and it will always be frustrating.

During installation, a precise measurement is usually taken, so everything will fit properly.

Installation is not rocket science. If you were a more experienced DIYer, you wouldn’t be asking. So only do it yourself if you’re really trying to save money.

The installation is actually quite straightforward, assuming some basic DIY skills. Please follow the instructions carefully.
