ᐅ Retrofitting a KALLAX unit with LED light strip – any recommendations?

Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to add an LED light strip to my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit to better illuminate the interior compartment. I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding suitable types of LEDs that work well for mounting on the KALLAX without affecting the power supply or the overall functionality.
It is important to me that the LED strip is easy to install, looks unobtrusive, and ideally can be powered via a power adapter (avoiding constant battery changes). Are there specific models or brands that have proven reliable among KALLAX users?
Additionally, I would appreciate tips on wiring (for example, hidden along the sides or back panels), mounting options, and whether dimmable lighting solutions are advisable.
Who has experience with such modifications and can share their insights? Thanks for your support!

Hey Elmir,
I had a similar question last year and got an LED kit from IKEA myself. The "Omlopp" set is designed for KALLAX and fits well. The price is a bit higher than cheap strips, but the installation is really easy.
I can only agree, dimming really makes a difference, especially for a cozy atmosphere.
Think about whether you want to control the light by a switch or smart controls, because with smart strips you’ll have a lot of fun later with colors, timers, etc.

Dimming is really practical, especially if you want the light for ambiance too. 🙂

Technical Implementation:
The LED strips should ideally be operated using a constant current controller to prevent overheating and to extend their lifespan. This is ensured with quality products (e.g., Philips Hue LightStrip Plus).
For basic strips, the power supply is therefore important—pay attention to the specifications (power, voltage) and use compatible dimmers if necessary.
In conclusion: Make sure to plan the cable routing carefully to minimize the risk of short circuits.

Technically, the strips should provide sufficient brightness of about 300–500 lumens per meter (0.3–0.5 meters) to adequately illuminate the inside of the shelf.

Thanks for all your feedback and tips!
The advice about brands and power supplies is very helpful. I especially like the idea of mounting the LED strips on the backside as indirect lighting.
One more question: Is there a good technique for self-adhesive LED strips if I want to remove them later without leaving any residue? I’m thinking about adhesives on wooden panels, like those used in KALLAX.
And what about heat generation – have you noticed any problems with extended use?
Looking forward to your opinions – thanks in advance!
