ᐅ Installing a retractable insect screen sliding door as a retrofit?

Hello everyone,

we are trying to decide whether to get an insect screen sliding door for our PSK patio door directly from the builder (for 975 euros) or have it installed afterwards. Similar kits can probably be found online for less, but would there be any advantage if the builder installs it? They would probably just mount it on the outside of the frame or in front of the roller shutter box, right?

I claim that a custom-made folding sliding door, smooth-running and finished in the desired RAL color, is not easy to do as a DIY project and also needs to be well-crafted from the start.

The price is reasonable for five panels. We paid €1,700 for two pleated blind panels for a door and sliding door in the desired RAL color.

For simple windows, I would just use store-bought products (such as Tesa) to stick onto Velcro tape.

Objection!
No cheap plastic—what you get at discount stores is junk.

It’s not plastic, they are the same aluminum profiles.
You just have to cut them yourself.
Sure, it’s different for sliding doors, as I mentioned.
But for a window, it’s actually an equivalent solution. I know both—once a professional installation at my in-laws, once from a discount store at my place.
Way better than those stupid grids with Velcro straps. Those are always junk.

As already mentioned here, it usually comes down to an aluminum profile with some plastic in the middle. I also received several quotes, and even 100€ worth of materials seems too expensive to me for something like this. But of course, everyone can spend their money as they wish. In hindsight, I find these prices to be outright rip-offs—starting with the manufacturer and ending with most installation companies.

If someone is looking for a reasonably priced solution, take a look at the Easylife range from Bauhaus.
The installation is very simple, and the 120x240cm (47x94 inches) model was priced at 129€.
The downside is that it’s not a swing door. They do have those, but for 249€. Unfortunately, it’s only 210cm (83 inches) high, which was too small for us. I don’t know the assembly details for that one.
The 129€ model only opens outward and has a profile depth of 11mm (0.4 inches) — important to consider regarding roller shutters.
All households in our building development now have this door.
Of course, there are arguments in favor of swing doors, but how often do you actually enter from outside while carrying a lot of stuff? And if that does happen, you can always open the door in advance.
By the way, this door was also installed at our neighbors’. The solid price was 600€ net. Someone came for a 5-minute measurement, then the door was fully assembled at the factory. A week later, it was installed in 10 minutes.
I have installed four of these doors myself and need about 45 minutes for the assembly (the first door took two hours). I’d say a professional installer needs at most 20 minutes.
Sorry if this sounds blunt, but for me, these prices are absolutely insane once again.

This topic is very relevant to us right now, so I would really appreciate your opinions 🙂

The developer only installed insect screen roller blinds on 4 windows for us. Now we want to have effective protection on at least 2 more patio windows.

I am considering a hinged screen door. We don’t want to hire a company for cost reasons, but we are a bit hesitant to drill into the window frames of a brand-new house 🙄

Has anyone already done this and can offer some advice?

Haha, I can totally relate to that.
Back when I lived in our house, I had permission from the landlords to do it, but I still didn’t dare to drill into the wooden frames.
So I chose the clamping method, which uses springs to hook into the frame. I wouldn’t do that again today. In my opinion, the springs are not good for the window seals; the window closes more stiffly.

Measure carefully using the four-eyes principle, take your time with the installation, and it will work out—it’s really not that complicated. But I completely understand that there is an internal barrier to overcome. I’m currently renovating too and will soon face this again… let’s see how brave I am this time 🙂
