Hello!

I am facing the task of renovating a small house and have no knowledge at all regarding construction or renovation matters.

The entire basement (which is not a living basement) has had a significant water problem for many years, even decades.

Before considering any renovation measures, the first step should be to make sure that all the walls of the house are in proper condition. It makes no sense to renovate the roof if the walls are in poor shape.

I don’t know what exactly needs to be checked regarding the walls and how this is done. But especially considering the long-standing water problem in the basement, this could have negatively affected the entire masonry (not just in the basement). Also, in some areas of the ground floor and first floor masonry, there are clearly visible long cracks. Two construction companies have previously commented that these are completely harmless.

In short: How (and by whom/using which methods) can I have the masonry of the entire house inspected to ensure it is in good condition? This should be the basic prerequisite for all other renovation measures.

Thank you very much for your help!

For example, check the website of the Association of Independent Experts and look for an expert specializing in masonry in your area. After an on-site inspection, this expert will be able to tell you quite precisely the cause of your moisture problem and what measures and costs are involved in fixing it.

Construction expert,

thank you very much for the tip.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a building inspector or structural engineer for masonry issues in my area on the website. However, I will call them again on Monday.

Thanks!

You might have better luck in the categories "Moisture Damage in Building Construction" or "Masonry Repair" :-)
