I recently bought a Billy shelf from IKEA to better organize my workspace. However, I noticed that the shelf feels quite wobbly, especially when loaded with books. My question is: what practical additional fastenings or measures would you recommend to significantly improve the stability of the BILLY shelf? I would prefer not to rely solely on the supplied wall anchors, but am looking for strong yet simple solutions that provide lasting support without compromising the appearance too much. I am also interested in hearing if you have had any practical experience with alternatives such as extra brackets, screws between the shelves, or even custom constructions.
Thanks for all the input so far; it’s very helpful. Here’s a brief summary:
– Wall mounting remains mandatory.
– Internal screws between shelves and side panels increase rigidity.
– Back panels made of MDF or plywood are beneficial, especially when screwed in.
– Small brackets inside on the shelves or the back are helpful.
– Fine adjustment via feet on uneven floors sounds reasonable.
Can anyone share more about adjustable feet? Which materials do you use, and do you have recommendations for adjustment? I want to avoid damage to the floor or the shelf caused by moisture or pressure points.

Can anyone else say something about the support feet?I also recommend height-adjustable plastic or rubber feet, as they distribute the load better and compensate for unevenness. Metal feet without rubber pads can damage the floor and provide less grip. Many of these feet can be easily screwed onto the shelf board or the underside of the side panels.
If you prefer a visually discreet option, there are also transparent plastic feet with rubber cushions. These protect the floor and noticeably improve stability.
I often use small furniture feet with felt pads underneath for the support legs – this way, you can adjust the stability, and the floor is protected. 😀 Just screw a threaded insert into the underside of the shelf and screw in the feet.
This is a nice, flexible solution that is also visually unobtrusive.
