ᐅ In which direction should wide plank flooring be installed?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Haro Disano design flooring. The planks are approximately 200 x 23 cm (79 x 9 inches) in size, so they are quite large, with a surrounding V-groove, which I really like. Now I am just wondering in which direction it would be best to lay these large planks. The room is about 5.7 meters (18.7 feet) long and about 3 meters (9.8 feet) wide. The window is on the long side.

Originally, I wanted to install the flooring across the room to make it appear visually wider. But now I’m wondering if the planks might look better laid lengthwise to have more full planks installed. Or would that make the room appear more elongated?

Yes... I’m familiar with the “rules” regarding the light source. I’m just a bit unsure because of the dimensions. If I lay the boards across, I have to cut almost every board. If I lay them lengthwise, I can sometimes place two full-length boards side by side. That’s why I’m a bit uncertain...
Just try it out to see how it looks. Usually, the rule turns out to be correct.

I have a question right away.
We are planning to install large Lindura wood flooring in the living/dining area and kitchen (L-shaped). The planks come in either 2600x320mm (102x13 inches) or 2200x270mm (87x11 inches). We get natural light from the south, west, and north. In which direction would you lay the flooring?
From east to west (from the kitchen to the dining area) or from south to north (from the dining area to the living area)?
Good luck, milkie

Just going by instinct: From south to north (which is how we did it for our L-shaped living/dining/kitchen area). But you will probably have to try it out for yourself.

That was also my first thought. Especially since the kitchen island oriented lengthwise also "elongates" the room. But other opinions are always interesting, and we are happy to be proven otherwise if necessary.

I roughly simulated it in Visio.

Based purely on the Visio drawing, I find the longitudinal version, meaning the first image, to be better.
