Hello everyone,

I have an issue with a Kallax shelf unit in the children's room that keeps almost tipping over when the kids play around it or lean on it. It’s a 4x4 Kallax, fully loaded with books, toys, and small items. Unfortunately, the wall behind it is not suitable for simple mounting (drywall without a proper supporting structure).

My question to you: What options are there to safely stabilize the Kallax to effectively prevent tipping, without making major structural changes? Are there special brackets or creative solutions that also work with lightweight walls?

I want to make the shelf child-safe and avoid accidents, but at the same time keep it as simple and visually appealing as possible.

Thanks for your advice!

Hi,

get a furniture wall mount specifically designed for Kallax. These usually come with plugs and hooks. If the wall is drywall, use hollow wall anchors. Important: always secure the shelf at the top to the wall.

Alternatively, some Kallax models offer slot connectors or metal brackets for the back to make it more stable.

Hello timan,

your concerns are understandable, and the tipping of a fully loaded Kallax shelf in a child's room poses a serious safety risk. The wall material being drywall can make mounting more difficult, but there are proven methods I can recommend:

1. Cavity anchors: These screw anchors are designed for drywall and provide good hold when installed correctly.

2. Anti-tip safety devices: There are special metal brackets or strap systems that connect the top frame of the shelf to the wall, effectively preventing tipping.

3. Floor supports: For additional stability, shelf supports that rest from the bottom of the shelf to the floor can make tipping more difficult.

4. Alternative positioning: If wall mounting is not possible, it is advisable not to place the shelf freely, but rather in corner areas where two walls provide stable support.

Avoid temporary solutions such as wedging under the shelf alone, as this does not prevent tipping.

If you wish, I can also provide specific product recommendations and sources.

That is absolutely correct, and the safety risk in a child’s room should not be underestimated. I would also recommend carefully checking the wall studs before installation. For drywall (plasterboard) without direct underlying support, it helps to use wall anchors that are suitable for hollow walls:

- Hollow wall anchors with expansion mechanisms provide good holding power,
- but toggle bolts or molly bolts are also often reliable options.

Additionally, you should avoid overloading the shelving unit, especially the upper shelves, as the leverage effect increases the risk of tipping.

That’s exactly what I mean. And if the shelving unit has a wooden back panel or similar, you can also attach flat metal brackets on the inside, which are then fastened with long screws into the anchors.

If you like, I can share some tips from hardware stores like Bauhaus or Obi on which products work well for this purpose. 🙂

I have personally secured a Kallax shelving unit in my child’s room with such straps and am very satisfied with the result.
