Hello everyone,
I have a BILLY shelf unit from IKEA in my living room, and I’ve noticed that the drawers aren’t very easy or comfortable to open. The usual recessed handles are minimalist, but in my opinion not very practical, especially if you want to save effort or if the drawers are used frequently.

I’m looking for ways to significantly improve the drawer opening on a BILLY shelf without completely ruining the minimalist look or compromising stability. Are there any smart modifications, special handles, or other tricks that you can recommend based on your experience?

It’s important to me that any changes are relatively easy to implement and not too expensive. Maybe you have found solutions that increase the ease of pulling the drawers without having to replace them entirely.

Looking forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello,
I recommend small self-adhesive aluminum handle strips. They can be easily stuck onto the drawer, improve grip, and have a discreet appearance. They are affordable and can be installed without drilling.

This is basically an option, with a few minor limitations. To significantly improve the drawer opening on a BILLY shelving unit, it’s important to consider not only the handles but also the pulling mechanism and ergonomics.

First, it’s important to note that classic BILLY drawers are relatively lightweight, but the pulling comfort can be enhanced by adding soft rubber or silicone coatings to the handles, which improve grip.

Additionally, you might consider replacing the recessed handles with flat yet sturdy pull straps (similar to those used on toolboxes). These are usually made from durable materials, can be mounted flush, and allow easier opening with less hand effort.

For users who access the drawers frequently, installing drawers with soft-close runners is also recommended. This not only improves usability but also helps maintain the drawer’s stability within the frame over time.

A final note on visual perception: to prevent the design from looking too bulky, I suggest matching the modifications in color to the shelving unit or choosing subtle metal finishes.

Which option is best for your specific case depends on how much effort you want to invest and how heavy the usage will be.

One question: Are you planning this change to be permanent, or is it more of a temporary improvement?

A useful addition to this: There are specially designed handle profiles that can be attached with adhesive, so no drilling is required. The soft, ergonomically shaped plastic handles significantly improve grip and are especially suitable for BILLY, as the fronts are otherwise quite flat.

I also recommend maintaining the drawer slides and, if necessary, applying a light lubricant or replacing them with higher-quality ones. This reduces the force needed to open the drawers, which is often underestimated.

If the drawers feel wobbly, the stability should also be checked. Loose screws or fittings can make operation difficult.

I agree that a minimally invasive modification using self-adhesive handles or handle profiles is a good option to keep the appearance changes to a minimum.
