Hello home builders,

Just a quick note upfront: great forum! I’ve been an active reader for a long time, but now I have a question shortly before our construction starts.

Our general contractor plans to build our roof structure using pressure-treated wood, specifically Impralit TSK 10.

Since we want to avoid any unnecessary chemicals, we are wondering whether an untreated roof structure poses a risk. Has anyone had experience with forgoing wood treatments? What should be taken into consideration? Unfortunately, there isn’t much information available online. At least for interior use, this treatment does not seem to be approved... and we also want to use the attic space somehow, at least for storage.

We would appreciate any feedback and guidance in making this decision!

The standards have been updated in recent years. Construction methods involving structural wood protection measures should be preferred over those requiring preventive treatments with wood preservatives.

This means avoiding chemical treatments and instead using sensible construction techniques that prevent problems from arising in the first place. For fungal infestation, wood moisture above 20% is required. Proper ventilation should prevent moisture accumulation. Insects also dislike drafts.

For roofing work, only so-called S10 battens should be used (e.g., 40 x 60mm (1.6 x 2.4 inches) S10). These battens are marked with red paint on the cut edges. They are sorted according to load-bearing capacity (number and size of knots) and are additionally kiln-dried.
