Dear forum members,
We are currently converting the attic into living space.
The question we have is which (effective and reliable) impact sound insulation is necessary.
The structure of the attic floor (viewed from below up):
Our question concerns impact sound insulation.
According to parquet manufacturers (we will have the company Meister install the flooring), an impact sound insulation layer of about 3mm (0.12 inches) (e.g., Silence Eco) or alternatively foam or cork should be installed over the Uponor PE foil. However, the installation video from Uponor shows that the parquet can be installed immediately without any additional soundproofing.
We appreciate any advice or tips and thank you in advance for your support!

The structure of the attic floor (viewed from below up):
- Wood beam ceiling with existing insulation of approximately 12cm (5 inches) mineral wool (this was not replaced, unlike the actual roof insulation)
- “Strong Board” OSB panels, 22mm (0.87 inches) thick, screwed down. The floor was leveled beforehand to ensure it is even.
- Primer for OSB panels will be applied starting tomorrow (primer recommended by Uponor)
- Followed by Uponor “Siccus mini” underfloor heating (dry system) with panels made of XPS 400 and a fully integrated aluminum heat-conductive layer
- Installation of perimeter insulation strips
- After pipe installation (9.9 x 1.1mm / 0.39 x 0.04 inches), an “Uponor Multi” foil will be laid. According to the manufacturer, parquet flooring can then be installed immediately
- “Top layer”: prefinished parquet flooring, approximately 10mm (0.39 inches) thick, installed as a floating floor

Furthermore, consult with the master builder – ultimately, not only the technical design is important, but also the execution, and it is always beneficial to work within the system of the master builder. If that’s not enough for you, take the reference route: use the latest top technology together with a master builder who is enthusiastic about the project and offer yourself as a reference (the master builder can later refer potential clients). The workmanship will be particularly thorough. In the six years we have lived here, we have had two prospects for timber construction, one for the folding glass system, and three for solar roof tiles. No one has shown interest in any other special features yet. The number of inquiries is not overwhelming, but the execution quality is excellent. Win-win.
