Hello everyone,

We have a very old Pax wardrobe and after focusing on other topics following our new build, now we have funds again and want to buy a new, modern Pax wardrobe for our bedroom.

Is there an alternative to Pax in this style?

Does anyone have experience with IKEA’s assembly service? I really don’t feel like handling the frame and sliding doors myself…

Thanks

I just assembled 4 Pax units. It wasn’t that complicated since there aren’t many parts.

However, I had them delivered directly to the rooms... I certainly wouldn’t have wanted to carry the 300-400kg (660-880 lbs) around.

Just wrote this in the other thread. We had it delivered, but assembling it took me two days (even with the sliding doors). Putting the sliding doors together takes quite a long time. There are many individual parts, many screws, it’s fairly heavy, and you have to be a bit careful—you don’t want to scratch anything right away. I also had to uninstall the door tracks again because the instructions weren’t clear enough for me (which doors go in front, which are at the back). Next time, I would use the assembly service.

In terms of price ($1500) and the wide range of options compared to Pax, we didn’t find any real alternative anywhere.

also Pax users here –
I would have it assembled if the total width is more than 150cm (60 inches). We managed the doors for the 150cm (60 inches) unit quite well with two people, but the large doors for the 3-meter (10 feet) closet are quite a hassle and really heavy. I had real trouble holding them steady so my partner could fit the top part. I’m glad the moving company will handle that again.
By the way, a “warning” if you only have an old Pax so far:
we find that the quality has unfortunately decreased a LOT.
We had an old one in maple and added to it last year. Maple is no longer available; we had to switch to this strange oak Sonoma instead.
Also, there are no solid wood fronts anymore for the drawers, nowadays everything is really cheaply foiled. That’s something to keep in mind if you’re used to the older quality.
However, in my opinion, there is really nothing comparable in terms of price...

Recently, we assembled two Pax wardrobes for my daughter and gathered all the individual parts ourselves, carrying them in the van. It’s definitely better to have IKEA collect everything for you (the costs are reasonable, and it saves a lot of time!!).

There are alternatives to the Pax, but the great thing about it is that you can fully customize it yourself – my daughter is happy ;-P

I am definitely planning to buy a Pax closet soon (Christmas bonus, yay). Due to the issues mentioned, we will only use 50 cm (20 inch) deep carcasses with hinged doors. Among other reasons, this is because we will need to remove the closet later when the underfloor heating is installed, and I don’t trust the dowels and screws for that. The doors I like are only available in 50 cm (20 inch) hinged versions. I haven’t found any good alternatives. A massive 3-meter (10 foot) wide closet unit in one piece just doesn’t work for me, and although these often look good from the outside, they are usually empty on the inside except for the clothes rail.
