Hi,

I am building a home office with Metod cabinets. There are some wall cabinets with glass-front doors included, intended for books – 80 cm (31.5 inches) high and, except for one that is 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide, they are 60 cm (24 inches) wide. Wooden shelves instead of glass, by the way.

Now I’m getting a bit worried about the load capacity and can’t find any information online: how many kilograms can I put in there? Books are really heavy...

So far, I haven't heard of a cabinet collapsing due to the weight of books. The question to consider might be: how much load can your wall anchors hold? Are you anchoring into brick or just drywall?

Dishes are also really heavy ^^ I wouldn't worry about whether the cabinet can handle the weight. The Billy units have a similar design and hold up well. But, as the previous poster mentioned, make sure to use the appropriate wall anchors (dowels).

The walls are a mix of fired clay bricks and some hollow concrete blocks – typical for the 1950s. Are Fischer UX8x50 anchors and 5x60 mm (roughly 2x2.4 inches) pan head screws spaced 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart appropriate?

I have also considered drilling and pressing a 30x30 mm (1.2x1.2 inches) beech wood batten underneath after hanging the cabinets to provide additional support from below.

60mm (2.4 inches) screws? Uh... better not. I would use those to anchor a small shelf to the wall that won’t carry much weight or a small light fixture. I fixed the last kitchen with 160mm (6.3 inches) screws...

160?! =:-O

They come out the other side again!

According to the load table from Fischer, the UX8x50 anchors in my walls hold at least 30 kg (66 lbs) each. Behind a 60 cm (24 inches) wall cabinet, there are two anchors, but I could also install three. That would give me 90 kg (198 lbs) including a safety margin (which is already factored into the tables). With UX10x60 anchors, each can hold as much as 50 kg (110 lbs).
