Hello everyone, I am planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets soon in my old apartment, which has very thin and rather crumbly walls – probably made of old plaster on brick. My biggest concern is that the usual wall plugs and screws might damage the wall and the cabinet may not hold securely. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to properly and safely mount these wall cabinets on such old walls while minimizing damage? I want to avoid the walls cracking or the fixtures coming loose. Maybe there are special wall plugs, mounting systems, or methods that have proven effective. I would appreciate any advice.

Just as an additional tip: When drilling, be careful not to drill too deep or too wide to protect the material. If you can hit wooden studs in the wall, it’s best to fasten there. For solid brick walls, a chemical anchor system is truly the best option.

I really appreciate how much attention to detail is being applied here! Especially with older buildings, it can be quite challenging since the walls are sometimes old and fragile. I tried using a standard anchor and unfortunately caused a crack quite quickly. That was frustrating. That’s why I can only encourage using chemical anchors or mounting plates. It’s better to put in some extra effort at the start than to deal with problems later on. I understand the concern about damaging the wall, but with the right methods, it can be avoided quite well.

I can understand that; it’s frustrating when the walls get damaged. What helped me with similar issues was distributing the loads better, for example by installing a mounting plate or using several smaller fixing points. This is especially worthwhile for Ikea Metod wall cabinets since they are secured with multiple screws.

A specialist in old building renovation advised me on choosing the right anchors. It’s important to carefully assess the wall. Protection and stability come first.

Thanks to everyone for the very helpful answers so far! To summarize, it seems that chemical anchors are the best solution, combined with careful drilling, and possibly using a mounting plate for particularly crumbly areas. I will take a closer look at the curing times and review the various product recommendations. Are there people in this forum with experience regarding how the load capacity of Metod wall cabinets differs with and without mounting plates under real conditions on old building walls? I am also interested in how stable the whole setup remains in the long term, as I want to securely fix the cabinets for more than just a year or two.
