Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new Ikea Metod kitchen and have encountered some uncertainties regarding the installation of the toe kicks. To avoid the toe kicks not sitting flush, coming loose, or being mounted unevenly, I wanted to ask for your experience and tips here in the forum.
Specifically, I am interested in the following points:
- What are common mistakes when installing toe kicks and how can they be best avoided?
- Which tools and work processes are recommended to ensure the toe kicks fit exactly and hold securely over time?
- Are there any special considerations for Ikea Metod compared to other kitchen systems?
I already have some experience with furniture assembly but want to make sure the toe kicks are installed neatly and correctly, as they are not only important aesthetically but also support the kitchen’s function.
Looking forward to your opinions and recommendations!

Hello salomon46,
I can fully understand your careful approach. To avoid mistakes when installing the baseboards, I also recommend the following:
- Make sure that the baseboards are specifically designed for the Metod drawer boxes. Sometimes universal baseboards are used, which can later cause fitting problems.
- Install the baseboards with enough clearance from the floor so they don’t rub, but at the same time avoid unsightly gaps.
- Double-check the corners, as small gaps often occur due to minimal dimensional deviations. You can use custom-cut end pieces here.
If you like, I can provide a brief guide on the correct positioning of the clips in the base, which has helped me a lot.

- Incorrect alignment of the substructure
- Improper installation or incorrect positioning of the fastening clips
- Inaccurate cutting of the boards, especially at corners
- Applying too much pressure, which can damage the clips
To avoid these mistakes, it is always worthwhile to prepare carefully: measure precisely, check everything, and lay the baseboards in place as a trial before fixing them permanently.

I would add: check the stability of the clips after installation, because if they come loose under pressure, the entire baseboard will feel unstable. With weak clips, it’s better to readjust them again.
I would argue that the biggest issue is not the installation of the baseboards themselves, but the insufficient checking of the underlying framework beforehand! Many assume the base is already properly aligned, but even small deviations can cause frustration later during baseboard installation.
Honestly, who actually measures three times with a level? The effort is usually underestimated. And sure, the Metod baseboards are not the most complex element, but they definitely require precise leveling.
Sometimes I feel like Ikea intentionally varies the measurements slightly so you have to spend more time adjusting during installation – a conspiracy/joke idea! 😜
Jokes aside – taking this step seriously can save a lot of trouble with broken clips or crooked baseboards.
