Jejacqueli12 Jan 2018 08:27Hello everyone,
I am currently facing the challenge of securely and professionally installing the baseboards in my new IKEA Metod kitchen. I have installed underfloor heating, which of course must not be damaged. My main question is: How can I fix the baseboards so that they are stable without causing damage by screws or anchors near the heating system?
Are there special installation methods, recommended distances, or materials that are particularly suitable to avoid affecting the heat output of the underfloor heating?
I want to prevent the baseboards from swelling, loosening, or impairing the heating due to heat or mechanical stress. I would greatly appreciate any tips on the optimal floor preparation and installation.
Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice.

How can I fix the baseboards so that they are stable without causing damage near the heating system from screws or plugs?I recommend attaching baseboards with mounting clips that are fixed only to the wall. This way, you avoid drilling into the floor and protect the underfloor heating. Make sure to install the clips with the appropriate spacer sleeves.

Attach baseboards using mounting clips fixed only to the wall. That is basically correct. The important thing is that the attachment is not done through the floor to avoid damaging the underfloor heating. Besides mounting clips, there are other relevant points:
- Use flexible insulation strips between the wall and baseboard to accommodate thermal expansion and prevent stress.
- Install the baseboards with a small ventilation gap at the bottom to allow heat release.
- If anchors are necessary, ensure a minimum distance of 5cm (2 inches) from heating pipes, but when in doubt, prefer wall mounting.
- Suitable materials include moisture-resistant MDF boards or plastic, as these swell less.
The mounting clips from Ikea Metod are designed for wall attachment. This system allows a stable fixing without affecting the floor. With underfloor heating, safety takes priority over stability through floor anchors.

Some systems have sufficient protective layers that allow for spot anchors to be installed without risking damage.
My view is this: a general rule to ensure a minimum clearance would be useful, but reliable data from the heating installation should be used to determine whether, for example, hollow wall anchors are appropriate or not.
Another aspect is heat conduction: could covering the skirting board potentially affect heat distribution? In Ikea Metod units, the skirting boards are quite dense – should these therefore be modified with ventilation slots or should a special type be chosen?
I am also interested in how the mounting clips are exactly installed. Are there any practical experiences regarding their durability or stability in everyday use? Here, I would appreciate concrete information.

Are there specific installation methods, spacing recommendations, or materials that are especially suitable to avoid reducing the heat output of underfloor heating?Hey, great that you’re approaching this so carefully! 😊 That’s exactly the right way to do it, especially with underfloor heating, which can be quite sensitive.
About a year ago, I did the same thing with my Metod kitchen! The best option is to use the IKEA Metod baseboard accessories designed specifically for wall mounting—don’t drill into the floor at all!
As for materials, moisture-resistant MDF or PVC works really well because they won’t warp. And very important: leave a small gap between the baseboard and the floor so the heat can circulate better.
When you use the clips, it holds firmly and you can easily remove the baseboards if needed. Just give it a try—you’ll manage it! Good luck! 👍
