Hello everyone, I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen system and am now facing the challenge of properly attaching the doors with integrated grip handles.
The doors themselves are quite heavy, and I want to avoid them warping over time or putting strain on the hinges. Additionally, the assembly instructions are quite limited when it comes to this specific door type.
My specific questions are:
- What fastening materials are best suited for the handles to ensure secure hold and stability?
- Are there any special screwing techniques or spacers I should consider to make sure the door fits flush and without play?
- How can I prevent damage to the grip recess when opening or closing the door?
If anyone has personal experience with these doors or tips on common issues, I would be very grateful!

You should also always drill pilot holes properly to prevent any splitting.

Hey Gobali, don’t get discouraged, the Metod doors are great if you do everything correctly!
When it comes to handle grooves, I always made sure the hinges were precisely adjusted. This way, you can perfectly align the door so that the handle groove doesn’t cause any misalignment.
I also use a small spirit level to make sure the doors hang straight.
Give it a try, you’ll enjoy it a lot!

Wow, this discussion is amazing!!! 🙂
I would add that especially when installing doors with recessed handles, it is important to protect the door material from scratches. Simply place a soft cloth between the door and the tools, which greatly reduces the risk of damage.
And yes, tightening the screws gradually in small increments is very important!
Keep it up, you’ll manage it!

- Screw technique & spacers:
It is recommended to first loosely screw in all the hinges and then hang the door in the casing.Thank you for the valuable tip! I’m wondering if there is also a recommendation for the ideal torque setting for tightening the screws?
I have a cordless drill with adjustable settings but want to avoid increasing the risk of damage.
Also: How do you deal with warping around the handle recess when the door is under long-term load? Are there any special reinforcements from Ikea or recommended retrofit solutions?

Regarding warping issues, I can say there is no direct Ikea accessory available for reinforcing the handle recesses.
My solution was to store the doors on a flat surface before installation and, if needed, apply thin felt strips around the hinges and on the inside of the door as small supports. This helps distribute the load more evenly and minimizes warping.
If the warping is severe, you might consider replacing the door, since these doors are usually made of MDF panels, which can deform under moisture or high stress.
How old are your doors? Did you install them yourself or have they been in use for a while?

I will definitely try your advice regarding torque and felt strips.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far – I feel much more confident dealing with this now!
