Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build cabinets in my small kitchen with very limited space using the Ikea Metod system. Due to the restricted floor area and unusual room layout, I want to create the best possible setup that offers as much storage as possible without significantly limiting movement. I am especially interested in which modular configurations and combinations of widths and depths make the most sense, including possible corner solutions, the choice between drawers and cabinet doors, and the integration of built-in appliances. Are there practical experiences on how to optimally plan and install the Metod system in tight spaces? Tips on assembly, connections, adjustments, or tools are also welcome. Thanks in advance!
Hey Bernoldbar! For your project: Don’t get discouraged—even with limited space, you can create a lot of storage! 😃
- 20cm (8 inches) depth is indeed shallow, but perfect for spices, cutting boards, or baking sheets!
- Corner cabinets with rotating inserts or pull-outs are real space savers!
I often build with drawers because you can quickly pull out the contents—super practical! A tip from me: also plan pull-out trays for the microwave or coffee station; this saves countertop space. Good luck with your build, it will be great!

Additionally, when the space is very limited, the installation method plays a crucial role. The Metod system allows for mounting with either plinth panels or support feet. In very small areas, the version without a plinth, using wall-mounted hanging brackets, can be used to keep the floor area free for appliance use or waste bins.
It is also advisable to use adjustable interior fittings, such as adjustable shelves and variable drawer heights, to flexibly adapt the storage space to different items.
Corner cabinets should not be underestimated—especially those with diagonal interiors and pull-outs that provide ergonomic access to storage. Careful planning using a floor plan and IKEA’s software is very helpful, as standard dimensions and opening angles can be simulated.
