Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen using the Ikea METOD system and want to focus especially on creating an ergonomic kitchen layout. I am particularly interested in how to arrange work surfaces, cabinets, and appliances to ensure that longer periods of working in the kitchen are easy on the back and that walking distances are kept as short as possible.
Additionally, I would like to know the recommended heights for base cabinets and countertops to support healthy posture, especially when several people of different heights use the kitchen. Are there any specific tips for planning the kitchen height or the arrangement of drawers and pull-outs in the METOD system? And how do you handle the work triangle between the sink, stove, and refrigerator?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello Lispra, ergonomics with Ikea METOD is very important, especially during longer cooking sessions! First of all, I would recommend adjusting the working height individually – ideally, the countertop should be around elbow height when standing with relaxed arms. This helps prevent back and neck pain.
The distance between the sink, stove, and refrigerator in the kitchen work triangle should preferably be between 120 and 270 cm (47 and 106 inches) to keep walking distances short without making it feel cramped.
If multiple people use the kitchen, you might also consider different plinth heights or adjustable work surfaces if possible. METOD offers a lot of flexibility with various base cabinet heights.
Drawers and pull-outs should be planned where you need frequent access to ingredients – pull-outs are often more practical than simple cabinets because they make accessing items easier and reduce strain on your back.
I hope this helps you already!

Countertops at about 90 cm (35 inches) height are often a good starting point. Drawers should be at hip height to allow heavy items to be removed without straining your back.
Regarding the work triangle: short distances are essential. The distance between work zones should be no more than 2.5 meters (8 feet). It should not be longer than that.
Tip: IKEA METOD offers tall cabinets with internal pull-outs – these greatly improve accessibility.

Hey Lispra and all creative kitchen builders! 😄
A little fun is allowed when working with METOD. Ergonomics is the unsung hero of every good kitchen: that means not only having the countertop at the perfect height but also having everything magically within easy reach.
Absolutely true – keep your elbows at a 90-degree angle when standing at the table; it’s great for your back!
Here’s another tip: plan “zones,” for example, a prep zone, a washing zone, and a cooking zone, each with suitable drawers and tools. Imagine you’re a kitchen superhero who can find everything in a flash. 💪
And the triangle formed by the stove, sink, and refrigerator – that’s like the cool trio in your kitchen that must work together, not too far apart, not too close. This saves you kilometers when cooking!
Good luck and don’t lose the fun!
