Hello everyone, I am planning to build a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and am looking for tips on how to maximize storage space that is suitable for a family.
I envision an island that not only provides workspace but also offers plenty of room for pots, pans, food supplies, and children’s toys, which often end up in the kitchen.
Has anyone had experience with Ikea Metod kitchen islands? How do you plan the cabinets and drawers to make the best use of storage? Which modules work particularly well, and do you have any advice on combining doors, drawers, and pull-outs?
I would also appreciate suggestions on widths, heights, or special interior fittings, especially when managing household and storage needs with children. Thanks in advance!

If you plan to use the island for multiple purposes, I would recommend a combination of drawers and cabinet doors with pull-out shelves.
- Drawers work well for large pots and pans that you want to access quickly.
- Doors and pull-out shelves provide storage space for bulky items or food packages.
- If there are children in the household, it makes sense to separate food storage areas from kitchen tools to keep things organized.
One tip: If you want space for waste sorting in the island, options with integrated waste separation systems are very practical and reduce movements in the cooking area.

Could you please explain whether a depth of 60cm (24 inches) or more is more practical for the island?I completely understand your concerns. Our challenge was to combine plenty of storage with good mobility.
We chose a depth of 60cm (24 inches), and it has worked very well.
The advantage is that you can easily reach all sides – which is especially important when children are in the kitchen.
Maybe it helps to consider that the island should not only provide storage but also serve as a workspace and a place for communication. Therefore, it’s better to have a slightly shallower depth with slimmer units for easier access.
