Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my kitchen using the IKEA Metod system and am considering the best way to attach the kickboards so that they look neat and are also durable. My main concern is that the kickboards not only fit nicely visually but also remain secure for years without loosening or warping.

I have read that some people simply clip or glue the kickboards in place, but I am unsure if this is sufficient, especially since we have a somewhat uneven floor. Therefore, I would like to know which fastening methods you would recommend that are reliable but also provide a clean finish – taking into account any possible adjustments or rework that might be necessary.

Maybe someone also has experience with specific screws, clips, or adhesives recommended by IKEA or others? How do you handle corners and joints to avoid gaps?

Thanks in advance for your tips and recommendations!

Hello heinrich45,

Regarding the installation of baseboards for the IKEA Metod system, there are indeed a few proven methods I recommend for a neat and durable fit:

- Use the original Metod baseboard clips from IKEA. They are specifically designed to hold the baseboards securely while allowing some flexibility for uneven floors.
- Before inserting the clips, carefully inspect the floor or substrate and, if necessary, level any unevenness with a leveling compound. This prevents the baseboards from twisting or coming loose after installation.
- For corners and transitions, precise cutting of the baseboards is crucial. Miter cuts at a 45-degree angle ensure clean joints. A fine file is useful for smoothing small edges afterward.
- If additional fastening is desired, thin screws can be inserted from behind, but only if the installation allows it, since the Metod system is modular.

If you prefer to use adhesive, I recommend a solvent-free mounting adhesive that remains flexible after curing. This helps absorb movements and stresses.

What type of flooring do you have? That could influence the best approach.

Good point, thanks! We have a vinyl floor with a slightly textured surface. Unfortunately, it’s not 100% flat; there are small bumps and steps, especially in the corners and along the wall edges. I’m concerned that many fasteners might become loose over time because of this.

The Metod system uses those plastic clips that IKEA provides by default, right? I’m wondering if those clips alone are sufficient for a floor like this, or if it would be better to combine them with additional screws or adhesives to ensure long-term stability.

Are there alternatives to the original clips that offer more grip without eventually damaging or visibly affecting the baseboards?

I’d also be interested to learn how you handle installation at tricky spots—like the junctions between two boards at corners—from a technical point of view.

Hello heinrich45,

First of all, many compliments on your detailed description; it makes advising much easier. Your concerns about an uneven vinyl floor are completely justified and require careful planning for the installation of the baseboards.

Regarding your questions:

- Original clips alone are often barely sufficient when there are significant floor irregularities. These clips are primarily designed for smooth and relatively even subfloors and provide a good but not excessive hold.

- In your case, I recommend combining the IKEA clips with an additional mechanical fastening. One option is small, flat screws that you can screw from the back of the baseboards into the cabinets. This allows flexible adjustment and prevents the baseboards from pulling on uneven spots.

- Alternatively, if screwing is not possible, a special elastic mounting adhesive used together with the clips can help. This adhesive should remain flexible so that the floor’s movements do not cause stresses in the material.

- When cutting the baseboards, it is crucial to align the joints precisely with sharp miter cuts. You can then perfectly smooth the miters with fine sandpaper.

- Important: If the floor is particularly uneven in certain areas, you can use small spacer blocks behind the baseboards to compensate for gaps. This minimizes stress and the risk of deformation.

One more question from my side: How thick are your baseboards, and what height do they have? Sometimes a slight adjustment of the baseboard height is useful to preserve the appearance and facilitate installation.

If I were you, I would also position the baseboards temporarily before the final installation and test the clips and possible screws in inconspicuous areas to get a feel for the fixing.

I hope these tips help you. If you like, I can also recommend adhesives that work particularly well in such cases.
