I plan to build an IKEA Metod kitchen and want to cut the countertops myself to save costs and stay flexible with the design. I have the following questions: How can I accurately and safely cut kitchen countertops from the Metod system without damaging the edges or causing the surface to fray? Which tools and methods are recommended, especially for someone with some DIY experience but no professional carpentry skills? Are there any specific tips on how to best transfer measurements, and what should I pay special attention to when sawing to ensure a clean and precise result? Additionally, I’m interested in whether there are differences between the various types of countertop materials offered by IKEA that could affect cutting.

You should use a jigsaw or, even better, a plunge saw with a guide rail. Tape the cutting line beforehand with painter’s tape to minimize splintering. Work slowly and steadily to keep the edge clean.

Your project sounds great! IKEA Metod countertops are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating or laminate. For cutting, I strongly recommend first measuring carefully and double-checking—better a bit too large than too small. It’s best to mark the measurement with a sharp pencil or a fine-tipped marker. Then, tape the cut line with painter’s tape to prevent chipping on the surface. If possible, clamp a straight guide rail along the marking. You can saw with a plunge saw, which usually delivers straight cuts. If you don’t have a plunge saw, a jigsaw will also work, but use a fine-toothed blade designed for laminate. It is important that the saw blade rotates in a way that cuts the surface from the top side to keep it clean—so, if possible, cut from underneath. After cutting, you can gently smooth the cut edge with sandpaper, but only lightly. This way, you will get a neat, precise result.

The countertops in the IKEA Metod system are mostly made of particleboard with a melamine surface or solid wood (less common in special models). Although the melamine coating is durable, it is prone to chipping when cutting. For cutting, plunge saws with industrial carbide blades or special laminate saw blades featuring fine teeth for clean cuts are recommended. A guide rail is essential to ensure straight cuts. Before cutting, applying wide painter’s tape along the cutting line significantly reduces surface splintering. Measurements should be precise; based on experience, it helps to leave a small allowance and then carefully trim to size. Afterwards, smooth the cut edge with fine sandpaper (grit 180 to 240) using light pressure. Generally, a well-controlled plunge saw is sufficient; if you have a router available, a round-over bit can be useful to seal the cut edge. When working with laminate or solid wood countertops, the choice of tools changes slightly, as solid wood should be cut more delicately with a suitable wood blade. IKEA sometimes explicitly shares this information in the product description.

Exactly. Tape is the simplest way to prevent breakouts along the edge.

When measuring, always take at least two measurements at different ends and use the larger number. For cutting: a guide rail plus a fine saw blade on the jigsaw is better than freehand. After cutting, finish the edges with fine sandpaper or a edge planer.
