Dear IKEA fans,
Yesterday, we assembled about 40 Maximera drawers. All of them are “real” drawers, meaning no hidden or internal drawers. There are low, medium, and high drawers.
Now we have a problem with the different types of drawer slides. Some have an integrated soft-close damper (red plastic on the rail), while others have dampers that need to be hooked in at the back during assembly. What is the difference between these?
Most recently, I installed a high 80cm (31.5 inches) drawer using the factory-fitted slides with the red soft-close dampers, but it sticks and doesn’t work properly. The slides with the separate dampers run smoothly...
Can someone help me? That would be great!
Best regards,
Judith

IKEA-Experte1 Mar 2015 15:03Hello,
they all have to work equally well. If the extension is properly installed, usually only the runner can be damaged. Take the drawer box out and check if the runner itself is not working properly.
The clip-on dampers are a custom design for IKEA; the standard product always has the dampers fixed in place.

Hello IKEA expert,
Thank you very much for the quick response. When sliding the drawer in, there is still a double clicking noise, first on the right, then on the left, as if the dampers engage differently before they start damping, but it definitely sounds like a “click, click.” Without the drawer box, the slides work perfectly.
Why did I mainly receive Maximera drawers that require hooking in these dampers at the back if that is supposed to be a special custom feature? In both cases, the dampers were included in the Maximera packages, not separately.
Best regards,
Judith

IKEA-Experte1 Mar 2015 15:35Check that all screws are properly tightened and carefully inspect the drawer sides from below. It’s also possible that the drawer box was not fully inserted. The clicking sound usually comes from the front locks.
The design is historically based. Initially, these full-extension drawer slides came without dampers. Later, dampers were added but sold separately, allowing customers to save money if needed or enabling IKEA to offer a lower base price. Additionally, this setup has the advantage that only the dampers need to be replaced if they fail within the 25-year warranty period. This design is only used for the 53cm (21 inches) deep full-extension slides; it is not applicable for the shallower versions.

Hello IKEA expert, yes, all the drawers are 53cm (21 inches) deep. I am currently reviewing all the Metod/Maximera base cabinets and their assembly instructions online again. I suspect that the sink cabinet with three drawers and the two for the induction cooktop are the ones with the integrated dampers. The question is whether all the drawers run on both rail systems, or if I actually need to find out which drawer belongs to the sink and cooktop cabinets...

IKEA-Experte1 Mar 2015 16:08The rails with fixed mounted dampers are shorter than 53 cm (21 inches); they measure 45 cm (18 inches) or 33.5 cm (13 inches).
