Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Malm wooden bedside table, specifically with the surface. There are some stains that I would like to remove without damaging the wood surface or the finish. The stains look like water or possibly coffee marks, so they are not just on the surface but seem to have penetrated deeper into the material.

Has anyone had experience or tips on how to remove such stains from the Malm bedside table? I know the surface is sealed with a layer of finish, so I am cautious about using cleaning products. What home remedies or special products would you recommend? Are there any tricks to avoid damaging the wood or attacking the finish?

I look forward to your advice, thank you in advance!

In addition to the tips mentioned, I would like to point out that stains that have already penetrated deeper into the wood cannot always be completely removed without follow-up treatment. In the worst case, sanding and resealing the affected area is the only solution.

If you want to try this, I recommend using very fine sanding pads (grit 320 and up) and specialized clear coats for furniture. Work only on the affected area as much as possible to avoid altering the color and texture.

If you have no experience with this, it may be wise to consult a professional. Avoid aggressive substances like methylated spirits or acetone, as they reliably damage the protective layer.

Ironing trick: place a cloth over the stain and quickly iron over it for 1-2 seconds at most, but be careful!

That sounds interesting, but isn’t it risky for a painted Malm nightstand? What is the ideal temperature for the iron – and is a regular linen or cotton cloth sufficient as a barrier?

I’m asking because I want to avoid causing any further damage to the furniture. Thanks in advance!
