Hello everyone, I have a problem with my IKEA Malm wooden bedside table, specifically with the surface. There are some stains that I would like to remove without damaging the wood surface or the finish. The stains look like water or possibly coffee marks, so they are not just on the surface but seem to have penetrated deeper into the material.
Has anyone had experience or tips on how to remove such stains from the Malm bedside table? I know the surface is sealed with a layer of finish, so I am cautious about using cleaning products. What home remedies or special products would you recommend? Are there any tricks to avoid damaging the wood or attacking the finish?
I look forward to your advice, thank you in advance!

Hey niirakli, I know that all too well! I had exactly the same problem with my Malm nightstand – water stains are really tricky on that kind of surface.
What worked really well for me was gently polishing with furniture polish and a soft microfiber cloth. Just apply the polish and gently rub it in; this often lifts the stains again! Sometimes mixing a drop of very mild dish soap with warm water and gently wiping the stain helps too – but don’t make it too wet!
Keep at it, it’s great when you can remove stains without causing new problems 🙂 Good luck!

Hello niirakli, I’m happy to help you with a brief guide on how to remove water and similar stains from your painted Malm nightstand.
1. Clean the surface: Use a slightly damp, soft cloth to first remove dust or dirt. Avoid harsh cleaners!
2. Check the stain: If you’re dealing with white water rings, which often occur on painted surfaces, there’s a trick using a small amount of mayonnaise or toothpaste (non-gel). Apply a little to the stain, let it sit for 10 minutes, then gently buff it off with a clean cloth.
3. Use polish: Afterward, apply a furniture polish designed for painted surfaces to improve UV resistance and protect the wood.
4. Caution: Do not use solvents or strong chemicals, as they will damage the paint layer.
I hope this helps! If the stains are darker, they might be deeper, and a fine abrasive paste with very low grit could be necessary, but use it carefully!

Always be gentle, don’t press hard or rub too much, otherwise it can make things worse. Good luck to everyone dealing with stains on Malm!
