Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Malm bed from IKEA, which comes with the typical classic furniture legs. After some time, I noticed that the legs wobble, making the bed feel less stable. I have already tried tightening the screws, but that doesn’t seem to help much.

My question to you: What is the best way to fix the IKEA MALM furniture legs so they don’t wobble anymore? Are there any special tricks to make the connection more stable without making major changes to the furniture? I would prefer not to use glue or similar products, as that would affect the appearance and limit future disassembly options.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hey parmar, I know that issue! With furniture like this, it’s often because the joints slightly “expand” or the screws don’t grip properly anymore. My solution: placing a bit of Teflon tape or fine felt tape between the leg and the panel to compensate for any play.

Understandable, those things can make disassembly really tricky later on. Have you checked if the screws are tightened properly? Often, a bit of adjustment with a well-fitting screwdriver is enough, sometimes adding some threadlocker (don’t worry, it still holds but can be removed later).

Personally, I like these simple tricks best; sometimes tightening the screws in a specific order helps too. Very important: don’t use too much or too little force. 🙂

Good luck!

Hello parmar,

to make your wobbly MALM bed more stable, here is a structured suggestion:

1. Check the screws: Ikea often uses wood screws in MDF parts. If the screws are stripped, they no longer hold properly. Try carefully applying some wood glue into the screw hole and then insert small wood shavings or toothpicks so that when you screw it back in, the material becomes firmer again.

2. Rubber pads or felt gliders: These can be attached to the bottom of the furniture leg to compensate for pressure points and reduce wobbling.

3. Threadlocker: As LAYNE already mentioned, you can also apply a small amount of medium-strength threadlocker to the screw to secure it long-term without making it too difficult to remove.

4. Clean the contact surfaces before assembly to prevent dirt from causing looseness.

Warning: Too much glue or adhesive can cause problems later when disassembling.

If the screws are already too stripped, get replacement screws with a larger diameter that fit the IKEA legs.

These are proven methods you can try without much effort. Feel free to share how it went!

I can only agree with that. Wood shavings or toothpicks in the hole, plus some wood glue, then screw the screw in – works great. This way you reinforce the hole.

If tightening doesn’t help, the wobbling might be caused by the threaded insert under the leg.

Sometimes it helps to remove the leg and wrap the screw with some felt tape or thin adhesive tape so that the thread fits snugly without applying too much pressure.

This is a simple method to compensate for some tolerance and makes the whole thing firmer again.

It sounds funny, but it really worked wonders for me 🙂
