Hello everyone,

I have owned an IKEA Malm dresser for several months, which unfortunately has now visibly warped. This causes some of the drawers to stick when opening and closing, which is obviously annoying. My specific question is: How can I best straighten or at least improve a MALM dresser that has warped—probably due to moisture or uneven load—without completely disassembling the furniture or having to buy a new one? Are there any proven methods or tips to reshape the wood or panels or to increase stability? I would really appreciate practical advice, ideally with recommendations on tools or materials I could use for this.

Hello jon10,

to approach the issue more technically, here are some considerations:

The Malm dresser is mainly made of particleboard or fiberboard with a laminated surface, which significantly limits its stability and flexibility. This means that warping is usually caused by moisture absorption, temperature changes, and mechanical stress. The laminated surface makes moistening or heat treatment a bit more difficult, as direct moisture can damage the surface.

My suggestion:

1. Remove the drawers and loosen all screws, place the dresser freestanding on a flat surface.

2. Try using ratchet straps (use soft straps with padding) and angled clamping jaws to bring the side panels into the correct shape. Increase the tension evenly and fix in place for at least 24 hours.

3. To avoid forcing the bending in the wood itself, use some wooden boards in the correct shape as support between the clamps.

4. If ratchet straps are not available, clamps combined with wooden battens as pressure distributors also help.

5. Avoid moisture; instead, apply heat with a hairdryer to better activate the binders in the wood, but not too hot to prevent damaging the laminate.

6. After straightening, you can additionally install metal brackets inside to permanently increase stability, and then store the dresser in a dry, well-ventilated location.

Regarding durability: This procedure improves functionality, but wood-based materials of this kind will never achieve the same long-term resistance to deformation as solid wood. Even after repair, temperature and humidity fluctuations can affect the dresser again.

I fully agree with the professional advice from my colleagues and strongly recommend checking the following points before attempting any repairs involving heat or moisture:

- Ensure the dresser is placed on a completely level and stable surface. Sometimes, minor unevenness in the floor is the cause of sticking or warping.

- Check if any screws or joints have become loose. Tightening them can often make a significant difference.

- Replacement parts from IKEA are usually available. Replacing a completely warped side panel is generally not cost-effective, but a new back panel or additional braces can help.

- For straightening, using straps and prolonged fixing is the best method. Apply heat cautiously, at most with a hair dryer from a distance.

- When stabilizing with metal brackets, they should not be visible to preserve the appearance. Self-adhesive or internally mounted solutions are preferred here.

The most important thing is: avoid causing unnecessary damage through interventions that you cannot reverse later.

To jon10:

Drawers usually stick because of warped side panels or misaligned drawer slides.

Apply tension straps, reshape, and fix in place for at least 24 hours.

If necessary, replace or reinforce the back panel.

Heat only gently, preferably avoid excessive moisture.

Install metal brackets inside for reinforcement.

Simply attach straps and align the dresser straight under slight tension. Then leave it like this for one day.

Do not force warped panels into shape, as this may cause them to break.

Afterwards, use metal brackets for stabilization if necessary.
