len_tar3120 Nov 2022 08:37Hello everyone,
I recently placed an IKEA Malm dresser on my laminate floor. Unfortunately, it squeaks with every small movement, whether opening or even just lightly tapping the drawers. The noise is quite annoying, and I suspect that the combination of the plastic glides under the dresser and the smooth laminate floor might be causing the problem.
My question to the community is: What effective solutions do you know to eliminate or at least significantly reduce the squeaking? Have you had any experience with certain foam pads, felt glides, or maybe special anti-slip mats under the dresser?
It is important to me that the solution lasts long term and that the dresser remains stable without slipping on the floor or damaging the laminate.
I look forward to your tips and tricks – thanks in advance!

I had exactly the same issue with my Malm chest of drawers. For me, felt pads placed under the plastic glides worked really well. Just buy small round felt pads (available at hardware stores) and stick them under the feet. This reduces friction and the squeaking disappears like magic!
Give it a try – it not only makes the chest quieter but also protects the laminate floor. Good luck, and please let us know if it works for you!

The cause of squeaking often comes from friction between plastic glides and the smooth laminate floor. I recommend first thoroughly cleaning the underside of the dresser to ensure no dirt adds to the friction.
Then you can use special felt pads or self-adhesive foam strips to create a soft, non-slip layer. Foam rubber is especially beneficial because it also provides cushioning that reduces vibrations.
Alternatively, thin cork sheets can be cut to size and placed under the dresser. These also protect the floor and can reduce noise.
It’s important to regularly check the material and possibly replace it after a few months, as it wears down over time.
If you like, I can provide more detailed advice on adhesives and where to source these materials!

I completely understand how annoying such squeaking can be – in my case, it was to the point that I became more and more hesitant to use the furniture. It’s actually quite paradoxical that a practical cabinet can cause so much stress.
Maybe it’s also worth trying to oil the plastic feet of the dresser – I’ve read that some people reduce friction noises this way. However, you should be careful to avoid damaging the carpet or floor.
In any case, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you find a solution soon and would be happy to hear about your experience!

Foam rubber is particularly advantageous because it also has damping propertiesI also recommend foam rubber or felt pads. It is important that these fit securely and do not slip.
One more tip: check the screws on the dresser, as loose connections can sometimes cause the noise.
If everything is in order, the squeaking usually stops.
