ᐅ IKEA MALM drawers keep coming off – how to secure them?

Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm chest of drawers at home with multiple drawers. Unfortunately, for some time now, the drawers almost completely come out of the frame when pulled. This seems to be because the current drawer slides or mounts no longer engage properly or have become loose.

Now I am looking for a reliable way to securely fix the Malm drawers so that they remain easy to open but cannot accidentally be pulled out completely. Does anyone know of practical solutions or suitable replacement parts for this?

I have already tried adjusting the mechanism myself, but I may have missed something—so I would also appreciate any tips on whether the system can be simply repaired or if a different mechanism might be more appropriate.

Thanks in advance for your expertise!

My MALM dresser is from around 2016 and doesn’t have soft-close, so it’s probably the older model with basic metal runners and small plastic stoppers.

Ah, there we go. If your Malm drawers are from 2016, you likely still have the classic metal runners with the small clip stoppers. That would explain why they slide out on you.

Honestly, I think it might be better to completely replace the whole system with simple retrofit kits from third-party suppliers, rather than buying replacement stoppers that will likely lose their function again soon. Just a thought.

Because what’s the point of repairing a heavily worn runner when it’s already pushed to its mechanical limits?

For those who don’t want to keep fiddling around: it’s probably wiser to invest in an upgrade to better furniture fittings.

Just my provocative opinion 😉

Hello everyone,

to wrap up this topic, here are a few practical tips from my own experience for securing MALM drawers without much effort:

- If the goal is to prevent the drawer from completely falling out, checking and, if necessary, replacing the small stoppers is essential.
- If you are ordering new stoppers anyway, also check the screws on the drawer slides. Loose screws transfer unnecessary forces to the stopper system.
- Make sure the drawers cannot shift forward at the front edge when being pushed up. Sometimes slight warping of the carcass wood or the drawer front is the cause.
- Use the appropriate screwdrivers for reassembly; too much force can damage screw heads and reduce holding strength.
- If you want temporary extra security, you can attach small plastic or rubber bumpers (e.g., door stops) inside the drawer to mechanically prevent it from falling out.

In summary: a combination of properly adjusted slides, intact stoppers, and secure fastenings is crucial.

Good luck!
