Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Malm bed (180x200cm (71x79 inches)) and recently it started creaking with every movement, especially when I turn over or get up during the night. It’s quite annoying and disrupts my sleep. Does anyone know the typical spots where this creaking might come from?

I suspect it’s the connections between the slatted frame and the bed frame, but the metal fittings could also be responsible. Are there any proven methods to reduce or seal these annoying noises?

What products (e.g., lubricants, rubber pads, felt strips) have you successfully used, and what approach would you recommend to make the bed as quiet as possible without completely taking it apart? Thanks for your advice!

Usually, it helps to tighten all screws securely. After that, you can attach rubber pads or felt strips at the contact points, which effectively dampen the noise.

That is correct. Additionally, I recommend treating the metal joints lightly with a special silicone spray or Teflon spray. WD-40 on moving parts is rather temporary since it evaporates.

Felt strips or self-adhesive foam pads under the slatted bed base frame, where it rests on the bed frame, reduce friction and prevent squeaking.

Completely disassembling the bed is not necessarily required if you can access the connection points.

I had the exact same issue with my Malm bed and can confirm that the squeaking sounds can come from the metal fittings.

The key thing is to first check the screws and tighten them slightly. Then I experimented with foam or felt strips placed between the metal parts and the wood to prevent rubbing.

Some users also recommend silicone grease instead of oil, as it lasts longer and is less damaging to the wood surfaces.

I also find it important to check the slatted frame support to make sure it isn’t loose. If the slats are broken or warped, that can also cause noises.

I’m very familiar with the problem of squeaky beds; it can really disrupt your sleep!

For Malm beds, the typical trouble spots are usually the metal brackets that connect the side panels to the footboard, and the slat supports, which often fit loosely.

I was quite frustrated at first, but with a bit of patience and replacing these parts with small rubber buffers (for example, furniture pads made of felt or rubber), the situation improved a lot.

If you move or reassemble the bed frequently, finding a permanent fix can be challenging. Still, try placing felt pads between the wood and metal parts and applying some silicone spray – this usually helps. It’s worth sticking with it!

Oh yes, that creaking noise, I know it all too well!! 🙂

I completely took apart my Malm bed and rubbed all the wooden parts with furniture wax. Additionally, I attached felt pads to the contact points – this really solved the problem perfectly!

Now I finally get a peaceful night's sleep again, without the annoying creaking.

Once you do this, you’ll notice the difference! So: don’t give up, it will get better! 🙂
