Hello everyone, I have been experiencing a problem with my IKEA Malm bed for some time. It squeaks loudly with every movement, especially when turning over or sitting down. The noise seems to come mainly from the slatted frame or the bed frame itself, but I’m not completely sure. I have already tried tightening all the screws, but the squeaking continues unchanged. My question is: Should I definitely seek professional help for this issue, or is it possible to fix such squeaking noises in a MALM bed using simple methods? Perhaps there are common weak points that can be checked or treated with household remedies. I would appreciate any tips or experiences you might have. Thanks in advance!

Hello rajahau, tightening is certainly an important first step, but with IKEA beds like the MALM, squeaking often occurs due to the contact between wooden parts without sufficient friction reduction. I recommend also treating all connection points with a lubricant such as wax or specialized furniture grease.

Another common cause is screws or metal parts moving within the wood, which can create noise. Sometimes placing a felt or foam pad under the existing screws can help provide cushioning.

In my opinion, professional help is only necessary if the bed’s structure is damaged or if you are unsure about handling the connections. Otherwise, this squeaking issue can usually be solved independently by systematically checking the critical points. 🙂

Loosen all the screws again, apply some wood glue to the joint, and tighten them back up. This often stops the squeaking.

If not, use simple furniture oils or silicone spray; that usually helps.

In addition to tightening screws and applying lubricants, there is a structured approach that has proven effective:

1. Completely remove the slatted frame and frame, then closely inspect all connection points. Usually, squeaking occurs where the wood or metal parts make contact.
2. Check for splintering or rough areas on the wood. Gently smooth these with 120-grit sandpaper, then apply lubricant again.
3. Do not tighten screws too much – excessive pressure can cause the wood to squeak.
4. For metal connections, watch out for rust or chipped paint and, if necessary, treat with some wax or candle wax.

I would only do this if you are sure the screws are properly seated. Wood glue can be helpful but should not be overused, as it can make disassembly difficult.

That sounds like a real insider tip! 🙂

I had a similar issue with my MALM bed, and after slipping a few small felt pads between the joints, the creaking suddenly stopped.

If you want to be sure and don’t mind a bit of DIY, you can try tinkering a little yourself – the squeaking is usually not a big problem, just an annoying nuisance that can be fixed with simple means.

Good luck, and don’t give up; sometimes all it takes is a bit of creativity! 😉
