ᐅ IKEA MALM Bed Squeaks Despite Tight Screws – Possible Causes?

Hello everyone, I have been using the IKEA Malm bed for some time now, but I am annoyed by a constant squeaking, even though all screws and connections are properly tightened.

I am especially interested in knowing: What causes could be responsible for the squeaking despite correct and firm screwing? Are there known weak points with this model or mechanical characteristics that might explain it?

I have tightened all screws according to the recommended torque and checked that no wooden parts move against each other, but the noise remains, especially when turning over or getting up.

Maybe there are people here with similar experiences or technical knowledge who can give me tips on how to diagnose the issue precisely and fix it effectively. Thank you!

I wanted to point out once again: Despite all mechanical tips, sometimes the construction itself is a limiting factor.

Maybe occasionally lifting the bed slightly every few weeks to free it from the floor surface could help.

I have also learned that a bit of patience and adjusting expectations can be part of dealing with such furniture.

New day, new tip: If the squeaking noise is coming from the head or foot end in a specific spot, check if the edges of the wooden parts are pressing sharply against each other. Lightly sanding the edges can reduce friction.

It sounds older than it is, but get some sandpaper and a bit of patience—this often helps to stop the squeaking. Good luck 🙂

This method is well-established for relieving stress. However, it should be done very carefully to avoid creating unintended fit inaccuracies that could affect stability.

For Malm, it is advisable to specifically address small irregularities at problem areas rather than sanding broadly or over large surfaces.

Additionally, I recommend applying a bit of construction adhesive when setting the screws. This ensures a secure hold and helps dampen vibrations.

Plastic sleeves can deform or shift

Interesting point, but is this really a general issue with the MALM?

I am curious if there are any long-term condition tests or user reports available that demonstrate how stable these sleeves actually are.

If not, this is something to watch carefully before taking any additional measures.

Thank you for the feedback. I will use assembly paste at the next opportunity, readjust the slatted frame, and also carefully check the edges and, if necessary, make light adjustments.

Regarding sifope’s question: I am not aware of any long-term experience with the plastic sleeves, but I will check the fits.

I find it quite interesting that even with tight screws and intact components, the combination of material properties and minimal micro-movements can cause squeaking. This makes me consider monitoring the indoor humidity more closely in the future.

Many thanks to everyone for the detailed advice!
